Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care in Santa Rosa
Wild Rose Care Home provides personal care to seniors with memory loss. Our 6-bed assisted living facility has cared for many residents with late-stage dementia and Alzheimer’s disease over our 15 years of operation. One of the advantages of our small size is our ability to provide a quiet setting for residents who experience negative dementia behaviors due to external stimuli. Instead of large activity centers and noisy dining rooms, our home-like atmosphere has a calming effect on residents with dementia. Our activities coordinator engages residents 5 days a week on a small group basis or individually. Personal care is delivered by familiar caregivers who are managed and trained by owner and Registered Nurse Mary Garcia. If your loved one has had difficulty in another senior living community due to memory loss we encourage you to call Wild Rose Care Home. We have had success over the years in caring for residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease who were unable to thrive in larger assisted living environments.
Dementia Care Strategies
Dementia care requires the implementation of strategies to mitigate negative behaviors and enhance positive emotions. One very common strategy used by Wild Rose Care Home staff is the validation of pleasant recollections, whether or not the recollections are accurate memories. For instance, if a resident tells a Caregiver that it was their birthday yesterday and they went out to dinner with their son, we do not reorient the resident to the fact that it was not their birthday yesterday and they had dinner at the care home. Reorientation is an outdated strategy that may provide temporary lucidity, but often produces aggravation, confusion, or depression. In the above example, reorientation may prompt the resident to miss their loved one. As dementia is a progressive condition reorientation will not reverse or cure a resident’s mental state; more often than not it only defeats positive emotions in favor of negative ones. Consequently, reaffirmation of positive memories is a more effective method in addressing memory loss and is standard practice at Wild Rose Care Home.
